If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog. br> Here"s the thing about the Fast & Furious franchise: it can be dumb fun. Every movie has the right to be entertaining even if it completely disregards physics and logic. As long as it establishes its tone from the start. You can"t make an action film where the main characters survive basically everything they shouldn"t and take everything seriously. It"s not that you can"t have that mix of tones (Furious 7 did it brilliantly) but that"s reserved for some of the best movies of the year since it"s not easy (at all) to balance so many different things. Hobbs & Shaw sets its tone in the first 10 minutes, and everyone knows what they"re getting themselves into. However, it didn"t quite work for me this time. br> The Fast & Furious saga is an undeniable success, even more in my country where it constantly breaks box-office records. It possesses everything a popcorn blockbuster should have: tons of action (car chases, explosions, fights, shootouts) easy-to-follow plot, and simple character development. There"s no problem in leaving your brain at the entrance of the theater for a couple of hours and just have fun. Of course, Hobbs & Shaw is ridiculous. It"s completely absurd, it has no sense of logic, and it"s unbelievable how many physics-defying sequences occur. But that"s exactly what they establish in those first few minutes, so people just need to sit comfortably and eat that whole bag of popcorn while watching the most ludicrous action on-screen.
So, if the tone is well-balanced, why didn"t I enjoy it as much as the rest? People seem to be having tremendous fun (even critics who usually demolish this type of films are liking it) so I guess I"m in the minority here, but I just found the action pretty underwhelming, and the comedy was way off for me. Granted, there are huge set pieces, and there are a couple of great action scenes, especially a motorbike-car chase between Brixton, Hobbs, and Shaw. True, there are a couple of laughs that I couldn"t contain due to how amazing Statham and Johnson"s chemistry is. Nevertheless, overall, I just don"t think it"s enough.
First of all, my main issue with the story: Brixton. Idris Elba is incredible as always, and I really want him to be the next James Bond. However, his character is so poorly written and so horribly explored that I wonder why they made him an enhanced machine with superpowers. Literally, there"s no difference between him and the other two main characters, which ultimately destroys the "superhero" vibe Elba should have. That"s the problem with having such an absurd movie: if your "heroes" are undefeatable due to their enormous plot armor, how is your "superpowered villain" different than them? If an explosion goes off with the three of them close, why do Hobbs and Shaw survive in the same way Brixton does? How does a punch from a "black Superman" has the same impact as a punch from the other two?
Then, the comedy. It"s not like I disliked Statham and Johnson bantering for five straight minutes in three different scenes. It"s just too long, and not all of the jokes land. The film itself is way too long, just over two hours. If I didn"t know about the whole Samoa sequence from occasionally seeing it on a TV spot, I would have believed the movie was about to end when it started its third act. It feels like it"s going to end, but then there"s a whole other massive action set piece to show off. For the first time in a long, long time, I almost fell asleep during the transition from the second-to-last to the last action moment. The action is also very disappointing having in mind David Leitch is directing. Too many quick cuts, and way too choppy.
Finally, there"s an attempt at the start of a romance that I won"t spoil, but. It"s not like it"s forced because it actually isn"t. It follows a logical path, characters don"t say stupid stuff to each other, and it was surprisingly being a good way of stopping to breathe and relax away from all the action. However, as the film reaches its conclusion, they ditch it altogether and never address it anymore. There"s even a line similar to "I"ll let you have a kiss tomorrow if we"re still alive" but they never go there again. It"s like it never happened. Why? The only thing that was truly being logical and emotionally compelling is completely ignored by the end. That"s disappointing.
I don"t want to be too harsh on the movie because I do understand how entertaining and fun it might be. I"m sure audiences will love it, and fans of the franchise will love it even more. The chemistry of the cast is palpable, and everyone is terrific. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are awesome as the action superstars, and they"re definitely the main source of entertainment. Vanessa Kirby is also pretty great, and I have to commend the film for keeping two spectacular cameos under wraps. You won"t believe who"s in this movie as well. There are still a couple of cool action sequences, and I did laugh more than a couple of times, so I guess it isn"t as bad as this review might transmit.
I know I"m in the minority, so I recommend all of you to go watch it and judge it for yourselves. If you enjoy absurdity, ridiculousness, and over-the-top action, as well as cheesy comedy, Hobbs & Shaw might be perfect for you. It didn"t really work for me, though. The comedy was not as good as I expected, the action is not that captivating, and Brixton is such a horribly written and unexplored character, that I kept feeling frustrated every time an action sequence ended. Go for the huge set pieces and the dumb fun, stay for the amazing cast"s chemistry.

Daisy Ridley is Rey and Adam Driver is Kylo Ren in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER What happened at the end of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker? We’re here to break it all down for you. WARNING! This story contains major spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. So much went down in the thrilling Skywalker saga conclusion, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And while fans and critics might be split, J. J. Abrams certainly gave it his all to wrap up the 40-year saga in the span of less than three hours. So, about that ending. (Last chance to run now if you’re not keen on spoilers. ) The end of the movie had a few different beats and loose ends to tie up. First, we got the epic showdown between Emperor Palpatine and Rey. Earlier in the film, Kylo Ren revealed to Rey that her true lineage was in Darth Sidious himself, Emperor Palpatine. Unbeknownst to audiences, Emperor Palpatine had a son, who went on to have a daughter, Rey — effectively making Rey a Palpatine, the Emperor’s granddaughter. Despite wanting to rule the galaxy, the Emperor found it best that Rey should kill him and take his place as the Empress of the Final Order. She would fully embrace the Dark Side and leave the Light behind. Of course, Rey understands the true power of the Light and ended up killing Palpatine by deflecting his lightning blasts back at him using two lightsabers. That feat alone killed her. But Kylo Ren, our Prince Charming of the film, used his Force healing powers to bring her back to life. (Not before the two exchanged a heated kiss from one another with the act of restoring her life killing him. How Shakespearean. ) In Kylo Ren’s sacrificial act, restoring life to Rey, this marked the final step to restore balance back to the Force. In the typical sequel trilogy fashion, this is parallel to what we saw in the original trilogy. In Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader saves Luke by “killing” the Emperor, giving his life in the process. Kylo Ren, like Vader, was redeemed in his last few moments as he finally gave himself to the Light. With this will done, we finally see him and Leia do what can only be described as “Force die, ” where their bodies are quietly raptured away to the other side. (We first saw this from Obi-Wan in Episode IV during his final battle with Vader. ) With Kylo redeemed in his death and Rey alive, the Resistance goes on to celebrate — no Ewoks or yub-nubbing involved (thank goodness). But Rey has one final act of business. Finally, we return to where it all began, Anakin and Luke’s home planet of Tatooine. Rey visits the old abandoned place carrying two lightsabers with her: one Luke’s, the other Leia’s. To honor them both, she wraps the sabers up and buries them in the sandy desert ground. (We suppose Leia’s lightsaber could have been buried in Alderaan. You know, if only…) Then, we also see that Rey has made her own lightsaber that shines the surprising color yellow (which apparently isn’t new in the Star Wars universe. ) When Rey is approached by a local, she’s asked what’s her name. In the beginning of the movie, a local at the ancestors festival asks Rey her name, and Rey is unable to give the little one an answer about her family name. On Tatooine, Rey finally gets the chance to answer the question with full pride. Before declaring who she is, she sees the Force ghosts of Luke and Leia one last time, looking at them fondly. In that moment, you can almost anticipate what she was about to say next. It’s clear that both Skywalker twins had a profound impact on her life, and they became the family she never had. Even though the siblings knew who she was (a Palpatine), that didn’t stop them from having hope that she would be the one to save the galaxy. And so, she declares that she’s Rey Skywalker. Yes, Rey of the Skywalker House, the First of Her Name, Breaker of Lightsabers and Mother of Porgs. For the surviving characters, this wraps up the series with a typical “happily ever after. ” Evil lost, the good prevailed, and balance was brought back to the Force. What happens after that, we may never know — at least for the time being. With this movie marked as the “end” of the Skywalker saga, some fans (and probably George Lucas) may be happy to give this narrative a rest once and for all. Still, this doesn’t mark the end of Star Wars as a whole. With more movies planned, some Disney+ spinoffs, and books, comics and video games galore, we know that there are more stories to tell in the world that George Lucas created. Some characters may return, others may not. But at least we can rest well knowing that peace has been restored to the galaxy once again.

Because Star Wars fans know a bit about the Leia footage that didn’t make it into The Force Awakens, they’ve been busy speculating which unused threads from that film might be integrated into this new movie. Could it be a scene showing General Leia trying to make larger military decisions? Perhaps, to center it more on the Skywalker legacy, we’ll see the Leia-Maz Kanata lightsaber scene that appeared oh-so-briefly in the trailer for the film, but was omitted in the final cut. Abrams said specifically that some of the Fisher footage will include interaction with the actress’s real-life daughter, Billie Lourd, who had a glorified cameo in The Force Awakens, and an expanded role as Lieutenant Connix in The Last Jedi. Some have also speculated that it’s no coincidence Fisher’s longtime friend Richard E. Grant was added to the cast of The Rise of Skywalker after Fisher passed away. It’s been speculated that some audio captured from the pair’s long phone calls over the years could help bridge the gap between Leia in The Force Awakens and Episode IX. Last summer, Abrams explained the thinking behind this effort to include Leia in the conclusion of this decades-long story: “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to re-cast, or use a C. character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII. ”.

 

Critics and audiences alike are divided on Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, which not only garnered some of the worst reviews for a Star Wars movie since the critically maligned Prequel Trilogy, but also saw lower box office returns in its opening weekend than either of the two previous "Saga" entries: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Nevertheless, there"s a lot more Star Wars on the horizon, although a great deal of information is, so far, unannounced. Here"s what we know is ahead for the series after the concluding Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. What Comes After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? What We Know There are many announced Star Wars projects ahead, but most of them are coming to TV. Similar to the raft of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters with shows coming to the Disney Plus streaming service, several Star Wars movie characters will soon have series of their own. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Returns Originally airing between 2008 and 2014, animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will return in 2020 for a 12-episode final season, writing a conclusion to the war epic. Set between movies Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars followed Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and his padawan, Ahsoka Tano during the conflict between the clone army of the Galactic Republic and the droid army of the Separatists, lead by Count Dooku. Supervising director Dave Filoni—who took on writing, directing and producing duties on The Mandalorian — will return to complete The Clone Wars story. The final twelve episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will stream on Disney Plus in February 2020. The Mandalorian Season 2 Nothing is yet known about the second season of The Mandalorian, though the concluding episode—available for streaming December 27—may give us a better idea of what"s ahead for the honor-bound bounty hunter. All we can say for sure is that The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau is already filming upcoming episodes. Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Disney Plus Ewan McGregor will reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus. Lucasfilm In September, Lucasfilm announced a long-rumored series about Luke Skywalker"s first Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor returning to the role first made famous by the late Alec Guinness. The series will be directed by Deborah Chow, who was also director of some of the most well-received episodes of the first live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be set eight years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, suggesting it will primarily take place on Tatooine, where Obi-Wan lived in exile, watching over Luke Skywalker from a distance. While no plot has yet been revealed for the Obi-Wan series, comics and the TV show Star Wars Rebels have portrayed Kenobi standing up to the Hutt crime syndicate and even fighting a rematch with Darth Maul, offering several possible avenues of exploration for the upcoming streaming series, to be written by Hossein Amini ( The Alienist, Drive). Cassian Andor Series on Disney Plus Cassian Andor in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. " Obi-Wan Kenobi isn"t the only Star Wars character getting his own series. Also coming to Disney Plus is a streaming series following the Rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), introduced in the 2016 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Captain Andor will be joined in further espionage adventures by the reprogrammed Imperial security droid K-2SO, with actor Alan Tudyk returning to voice the character. The Cassian Andor series will be executive produced by The Americans writer and producer Stephen Schiff. Since Rogue One ends with the death of the Rebel spies responsible for stealing the Death Star plans—the original Star Wars opens with the plans in the possession of Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher)—the Andor series will necessarily serve as a prequel to that movie, making the series another entry in the crowded narrative space between the events of Revenge of the Sith and George Lucas" 1977 original. As it stands now, the next Star Wars movie is expected in theaters December 16, 2022, staking out a substantial break—especially in comparison to the annual Star Wars movie release schedule Disney has maintained since 2015"s The Force Awakens —in between The Rise of Skywalker and whatever comes next. Disney announced the 2022 movie in May, alongside two other future Star Wars release dates: December 20, 2024, and December 18, 2026. But the nature of those movies is not yet known. It was previously widely presumed that the 2022 Star Wars movie was most likely the first in a trilogy to be written by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, but the duo has since split with Lucasfilm. In November, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had a director lined up for the 2022 Star Wars movie, but the announcement of his or her name isn"t expected until January 2020. Two other names are also attached to future Star Wars projects: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who was announced to be producing a Star Wars movie in September. Those projects are still untitled, with no plot yet revealed, but a December interview with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy suggests the future of Star Wars won"t follow directly from The Rise of Skywalker. "It"s a really important transition for Star Wars, " Kennedy told The Los Angeles Times, describing what comes next. "What we"ve been focused on these last five or six years is finishing that family saga around the Skywalkers. Now is the time to start thinking about how to segue into something new and different. " In other words, don"t expect a Star Wars: Episode X, even if Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron might still pop up in future series entries. "I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe, but that"s all that can be said for now, " Feige told The Hollywood Reporter in November. As for Johnson, the Knives Out director was once rumored to be planning an entirely new Star Wars trilogy, with the intention of writing and directing the first one himself. But in a subsequent interview with Variety, he suggested the cinematic future of Star Wars may still be in considerable flux. Or, at least, that previous announcement and rumors shouldn"t be seen as current when it comes to the future of Star Wars. "I"m still talking to Lucasfilm. They haven"t announced anything, " Johnson told Variety in November. "Every single day there"s a new thing. Until it"s up on, don"t believe it. ".

I"ve been following the coverage—the good and the bad—and I maintain that it wasn"t a great movie. It was fine. It wasn"t worse than the prequels, but it was desperately trying to please everyone. This last chapter of the Skywalker saga made a conscious effort to negate or re-write bold storytelling leaps that Rian Johnson made in its predecessor, The Last Jedi. In many ways, that makes it one of the most disappointing and frustrating Star Wars films of all time. As Star Wars films tend to do, The Rise of Skywalker is filled with plot holes and inconsistencies—far more than the first two films in the new trilogy. MacGuffins like the dagger and the Sith Wayfinder are nonsensical—especially only given the context we get in the actual movie. I don"t even want to get into Palpatine"s baffling plan, or how Rey was able to use Luke"s X-Wing. The thing that continues to bother me, though, is Chewbacca"s non-death midway through the movie. Let"s be very clear: I didn"t want to see Chewbacca die. But the whole bait and switch of his death and its reversal is indicative of the bigger problems of The Rise of Skywalker. About halfway through the film, Rey, Finn, Poe, and Chewbacca are on Pasaana tracking down the Wayfinder, which will help them reach Emperor Palpatine. Kylo Ren intercepts them as they"re about to leave with the Wayfinder. Rey then confronts him and while she"s distracted with Kylo, a First Order transport lands and captures Chewbacca. The audience see"s only one transport land, and Chewbacca is loaded into the same transport. Neither the audience nor any of the other heroes see a second ship land—and considering they"re on a vast, empty desert, there"s no reason to think they would not see another ship land and whisk Chewie away. When Rey sees the ship flying away with Chewbacca, presumably on board—and to be clear it"s later established that she can sense where the Wookiee is from far away—she uses the Force to pull the transport back to the ground. Kylo intervenes, pushing the ship back into the air, and a sort of tug of war takes place. As Rey struggles to pull the ship and save Chewie, her emotions get out of control and suddenly she shoots Force Lightning from her fingertips, destroying the transport. Chewie is dead, or so she believes. Lucasfilm Ltd. It"s a powerful, heartbreaking moment, and a turning point in the film, where Rey finally sees the real, tangible terror of her power. She knows entirely what she"s capable of, and Rey believes this is evidence of her slipping to the Dark Side. Had Chewbacca died in this moment it would have been tragic—a gut punch of a death and one of the most shocking twists in the Skywalker Saga. To see a beloved original trilogy character die by collateral damage would have been a bold choice. But Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is not a bold film. It is spineless. And that"s why mere minutes later a character literally says "he must have been on another transport. " It"s storytelling at its laziest. Later in the film, it"s clearly established that Rey can feel Chewbacca"s presence on a ship from far away, and she learns that he"s still alive. So, why couldn"t she sense it in this moment? Why didn"t she or anyone else sense or see the other transport? This blaring plot hole is agonizing. What"s worse though is that it"s a great example of how cowardly this film is—how terrified it is to challenge the viewers as The Last Jedi did before it. As much as I would have been heartbroken to see Chewie die in this moment, it would have made me feel something. It would have been unforgettable, and would have given the film real stakes. These gutless storytelling choices are all over The Rise of Skywalker. The death of C-3PO was teased heavily in later trailers, but, like Chewbacca"s death, it was reversed with a throwaway line minutes after the droid"s emotional goodbye. The only hero death we see before the climactic finale is Leia"s emotional passing. And that is a touching moment of the film. Abrams and Disney handled the real world death of Carrie Fisher with grace and respect. But that was a narrative choice forced on Abrams because of a real world tragedy. Other than Leia, the only main character death we see in TROS is Ben Solo"s after sacrificing himself for Rey. Her death is reversed minutes after she dies killing Palpatine. The rules and logic of life and death in this film make no sense. How did Palpatine return? How did Ben Solo suddenly use this new Force power to bring Rey back to life? Why are we to believe that Palpatine is actually dead when life and death are so meaningless in this franchise? I keep thinking about these scenes, because the idea of preventing the people you love from dying was such a key driving force in the prequel series. Remember the lesson Palpatine teaches Anakin about Darth Plagueis "The Wise" in Revenge of the Sith? Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself. It"s this idea, that Anakin can prevent Padme"s death, that convinces him to turn to the Dark Side and throw the next century into chaos. The unnatural tampering with the cycle of life and death is the ultimate evil in Star Wars. Yet, Ben Solo does this without any trouble in the closing moments of The Rise of Skywalker. And on a macro level, this conclusion to the Skywalker Saga is guilty of being corrupted by the same fear—that desire to keep the characters we love from dying. I keep thinking about this unwillingness for Abrams to let anything die and it"s truly aggravating. Especially after such a bold proclamation in The Last Jedi to "let the past die. " Why was Disney so afraid to kill Chewie? Why did Disney go through such lengths to build up the sudden return of Palpatine only to reveal it with no explanation in the opening crawl? Why bring back Han Solo once again? Why diminish the sacrifice of C-3PO? Why make any of these decisions only to reverse them? To me this is a manipulative, pandering way of making films. Marvel movies operate the same way: there are no stakes, there is nothing to fear, you"re just bathed in a warm light of comfortable nostalgia. Maybe, with whatever comes next in the Star Wars franchise, filmmakers won"t be afraid to hurt the audience, make them feel actual emotions, and put our heroes in actual danger. Those are, after all, the basic tenets of storytelling.
